Carnitine is a non-essential, water-soluble amino acid with properties reminiscent of a vitamin. By non-essential is meant that under normal circumstances the body can itself produce carnitine in the liver and kidneys from the amino acid lysine with the help of the amino acid methionine and vitamin C. In addition, iron, vitamin B6 and niacin are involved in a number of enzymatic processes. Only the L-form of carnitine is useful for humans.

Carnitine plays an important role in the body's carbohydrate and fat metabolism. The amino acid has a positive effect on the body's energy metabolism by aiding in the transport of energy.

However, the content of carnitine decreases with increasing age.

The largest source of carnitine in the diet is from dairy products and red meat with the highest content in lamb, game and beef. Carnitine is found only to a small extent in plant protein, which is why vegetarians more often have low levels of this amino acid.
