Coenzyme Q10 (also simply called Q10) is a vitamin-related substance that plays a central role in the cells' energy metabolism. The substance actively participates in the conversion of fat, carbohydrate and alcohol into the energy-containing molecule ATP protein, (adenosine triphosphate), which stores energy in its chemical form. When a cell needs energy, it breaks down the ATP molecule and releases the energy stored inside. The whole process takes place in the cells of some small bean-shaped structures (mitochondria). Muscle cells in particular need large amounts of energy, and therefore muscles contain significantly more mitochondria than other cell types. The heart muscle is a good example of body tissue, where the cells contain many mitochondria and the energy requirement is great.
Q10 is found in a variety of foods. Good sources of the substance include:
In addition, we humans can form Q10 ourselves. The body's own production of Q10 takes place in the liver. As we get older or as a result of illness, our ability to produce Q10 decreases. Experts estimate that the body's Q10 content is highest when we are in our mid twenties. Then it starts going the other way.
Dietary supplements should not replace a varied diet.
