What is BioActive B12?
BioActive B12 are round, pink lozenges with a pleasant taste of peppermint. Each tablet contains 600 micrograms of methylcobalamin which is vitamin B12 in its active form. The tablets can be both sucked and chewed, but should not be swallowed whole, as the absorption primarily takes place via the oral mucosa. The dosage is 1-2 tablets daily. The dosage is high in relation to the set reference intake, but is not associated with the risk of overdose.
Why active B12?
Vitamin B12 in the form of cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin must both be converted in the body into one of the active forms before they can be utilized. This activation usually weakens with age and may also be reduced for some other reasons. Since methylcobalamin contains a methyl group, which is needed for it to perform its functions, it is more effective than inactive forms.
It is not uncommon for doctors to give B12 as injections into a muscle. In this way, dependence on intrinsic factor or on decreased uptake for other reasons in the intestine is avoided. However, research has shown that a high dose of B12 in the form of lozenges can also be absorbed effectively through the oral mucosa. It also does not seem to decrease the uptake if the tablets are chewed as long as they are not swallowed.
